See Every Moment as a Fleeting Opportunity
This can happen at work, at home, when you're driving, anywhere - but you can combat it. You can willingly take back control of your attention. If you want higher levels of achievement in life you're going to need to give your full attention to the tasks and people at hand.
The Top 4 Ways to Focus
- Say "no" more often - As a business owner or entrepreneur it's easy to want to do too much too fast. 2 or 3 solid marketing strategies will significantly outperform 7-8 average ones in any market. Focus on a few strategic objectives and stick with them.
- Make fewer decisions - Delegate decisions that you make - our brain constantly wastes energy determining what we should wear, eat, say, tweet or comment on. Use the 80/20 rule when making your decisions, focus 80% of your attention on 20% of the decisions (the important ones).
- Set a reminder to focus - Set an alarm on your phone that goes off every 3 hours and says "Where should you be focusing your thoughts right now?" I often find myself down some rabbit-hole when that alarm goes off, it really helps bring me back to the task or people at hand.
- Ditch your device - When you go into "create mode", turn off your phone and close your email. Eliminate the distractions that will pop-up in your face and distract you. When I write, I close all apps, web pages and instant messaging that might distract me. When I'm writing and creating, I close everything and focus on that one task.
This Is Real Life - Focus on It
Consider the moments that pass by while you are absorbed in your device or your work - was it worth missing your kid's first steps? Their first time on a bike? Them walking across the stage at graduation? Not for me.
We are so connected with people in "the cloud" we've lost touch with people in real life. Brendon Burchard recently posted a great video about this. I strongly recommend it.
Choose to live in the moment again, starting NOW. Put down your phone and look at the person who is talking to you. Start practicing the 4 steps I outlined above and see if you notice a difference.
